Prince & Bates Opticians have chosen to support Fight for Sight, the main charity in the UK dedicated to funding world-class research into the prevention and treatment of blindness and eye disease.

About Fight for Sight

It is estimated that there are almost 2 million people in the UK and over 285 million worldwide who are affected by sight loss. Age-related causes of visual impairment and blindness are increasing as is blindness due to uncontrolled diabetes.

These are startling statistics - and ones that Fight for Sight is intent on changing for the better. Because our goal is to create a future everyone can see.

Since 1965 we've been working towards that goal by raising funds to support pioneering research to prevent sight loss and treat a wide range of eye conditions. Over the next few years we aim to commit £20 million to fund the highest standard of eye research which will help to reduce the number of children and adults affected by blindness.

As a member of the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) we comply with their guidelines on peer review and all research applications are assessed by our own scientific panel and by international leaders in relevant fields. All research applications must also state which of our research priorities the project will address, helping us to meet our strategic goals.

The research we fund has achieved many breakthroughs and successes:

  • Saving the sight of thousands of premature babies through understanding and controlling levels of oxygen delivery.
  • Providing the funding for the research leading to the world's first clinical trial for choroideremia.
  • Bringing hope to children with inherited eye disease by helping to fund the team responsible for the world's first gene therapy clinical trial.
  • Identifying new genes responsible for keratoconus and Nance-Horan syndrome.
  • Developing a new genetic test based on next generation DNA sequencing technology that will give many more patients a definitive diagnosis for inherited eye conditions.
Eye research is severely underfunded because killer diseases win the fight for government and charity funding. We are wholly dependent on voluntary donations - such as those raised through the generous support of Prince & Bates Opticians and their customers. Please support us and help make sight loss a thing of the past.
